Orkurannsóknarsetur

Applications are invited for an immediate Post-doctoral position in the Energy lab of the School of Science and Engineering, Reykjavik University, Iceland. The successful applicant will be an active participant on basic research conducted on fundamental properties of vacuum electronic devices at the micro scale. Vacuum electronic devices are the most suitable technology for producing high frequency, high power, electric signals.  They are a dominant technology in space based communications since they are both compact and resistant to radiation damage.  Currently there is a drive to reach ever smaller length scales and higher frequency.  There is an interest in vacuum devices on the order of µm and even nm.  Microscopic vacuum devices differ in their behavior from their macroscopic counterparts in many fundamental ways.  This is due to quantum effects, surface irregularity on the same scale as the device, and an increased role played by Fowler-Nordheim emission.  It is proposed to undertake some simple theoretical work on the subject matter of microscopic and nanoscale vacuum-electronics in the hope of understanding fundamental differences and similarities between the behavior of vacuum electronics on the nano- and microscales and macroscopic devices.

Candidates must hold a PhD in engineering, physics, applied mathematics or a related field. Reykjavik University is a young vibrant university and the successful candidate will have the opportunity to shape the future of a growing institution. Competitive salaries and a relocation package are offered.

Applicants are kindly asked to submit applications, including a curriculum vitae and a list of publications and references, to Dr. Ágúst Valfells (av@ru.is). Review of applications begins immediately and continues until the position has been filled.
